Improved Labor Integration of Vulnerable Youth in Armenia through Apprenticeship

The City of Geneva awarded funds to GAN Global to provide technical support to two multi-year projects targeting vulnerable groups in Armenia, engaging employers and providing both psychological and work development support to those affected by conflict. The project has reached 500 over youth, ensured the creation of a House of Apprentices, and hosted a Best Apprentices Ceremony with the Mayor of Gyumri.

The challenge

The unemployment rate in Armenia in 2020 was 20%, with youth unemployment reaching almost 37%. This is one of the main causes of poverty, inequality, and migration flows in the country. Conflict in 2020 further exacerbated the problem, excluding young people from entering the workforce and from vital training opportunities.

What we did

With the implementing partner, the Miassine Foundation, we launched the “House of Apprentices,” a training center for apprentices, particularly targeting vulnerable groups. The digital platform www.ashkert.am was also launched to match training opportunities between learners and employers.

Outcomes

Over 15 apprentices are currently training and working at the House of Apprentices as part of its everyday operations, while more than 215 youth have received digital training, and 70 seniors are active members of the intergenerational club. Over 20 young people have received psychological support, tied to workplace training, and 10 apprentices were recognized as the “Best Apprentice” in a variety of sectors with the Mayor of Gyumri.

There’s no place where we can come, see each other, talk, tell each other how the days are going. I don’t remember the last time I attended a concert, a theatre performance, or a movie. Here, I live again.

I can confirm that a tremendous amount of work has been done. I’m sure it will be not only a pleasant place for the community but also a good place to work. I hope the training programs will continue for all beneficiaries.
